In ten sparse and poignant stories, Cutting Your Losses plumbs the lurid, tormented aspects of humanity which simmer beneath the surfaces of our lives and emerges clutching the thinnest sliver of hope. Beginning with the suicide of a beloved sister and culminating with a simple plea for some peace and quiet, these pieces will shake you out of your reverie and remind you of the quiet bravery that even the least of us is capable of demonstrating.
Cutting Your Losses edition by Robin Kalinich Literature Fiction eBooks
My over-all ranking is 4-1/2 stars. Since Amazon does not let put the 'half' in, I've rounded up to 5.This group of writings is composed of small vignettes, usually just a scene or two, though sometimes more. We enter the protagonist's life at a cross roads, with the corresponding opportunity that is sometimes taken or sometimes lost.
This is not about happily ever afters but focused on gritty survival. It drives forward a measure of the character's strength.
My favorite of these tended to have hope hidden between the lines of brutal reality. Not all of these prose poems contained even a glimmer of hope in their quest for base survival. In these occasions, I felt the author had hidden some of herself from the reader.
These are well written and edited and if you are looking to delve into the darker side of life, I highly recommend them.

Cutting Your Losses edition by Robin Kalinich Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Couldn't put this down, really enjoyed this author. The characters are believable and the plots are exciting; excellent up to date detail and gripping stories with well constructed plots. Looking forward to further offers.
Robin Kalinich"s collection of short stories are non-stop protrayals of gritty women who experience the gamut of painful human experience.
Her heroines are flawed human beings who suffer and often survive the brutality and humiliation of the underclass of American Society.
From Louise, the police call dispatcher who faces an impossible choice to Dody, whose sensual enjoyment turns to horror, these short vignettes stop and make us think about the quality of human life.
The read will remember these slices of life for a long time.
Bill Stevens, author of The Promise of America
Heavy stuff. Vulnerable characters at the tipping point in this collection of short vignettes. Imagery is crisp and the dialogue short and to the point. I would've like to have seen several of these expanded into longer works, particularly "Can't Scrub It Off" and "Transactions." Nevertheless, a fast engrossing read.
The moment I opened Cutting Your Losses I couldn't stop. These dark stories are addicting and I had to keep reading for the next "fix." Robin gets to the truth quickly, for dark also means her characters are authentic and I felt like I knew someone like this, and empathasized with their pain. Major life issues of love and death, sex and the next addiction all come through loud and clear in these stories. Start reading ...her characters will follow you around in your head for days afterwards and you will be a bit changed yourself.
These are spare, stark and startling scenes Robin Kalinich paints for us on the pages of Cutting Your Losses. From her heart-wrenching "Elegy in Orange" to the shock of "I Want To Live Again," and indeed in every word in between, we have here a writer compelled and assuredly enabled to snap you out of a safe or simple world, and take you places you might not want to go. But you absolutely should go. Robin builds vistas with words, and finds beauty and nobility deep in the cold, dark cellars where only the bravest authors are willing to venture. Expect more stunning art from the pen of Robin Kalinich, and allow yourself be haunted by the stories of this remarkable collection, again and again, while you wait.
Although this collection of ten stories is definitely gritty and often unsettling, I found it so full of vivid imagery and realistic characters that I was immediately sucked in. The stories are set in a variety of unusual places, from trailer parks to dive bars, and I felt fully immersed in every setting as I read. Each story gives the reader just enough to connect with the characters and the story without being too wordy, showing the author's mastery of writing. If you are a fan of E. Annie Proulx or Cormac McCarthy you will definitely enjoy these stories.
