Paradise can be hell.

Most people would say being stranded in the villa of Spanish shipping magnate Miguel García Arquero on the beautiful isle of Ibiza wasn’t such a bad deal. But Hudson Barber isn’t one of them. To him, being stuck without a passport in a foreign country far from home is a nightmare, made worse by the fact that the person who did the stranding was his flighty twin brother.

Unwilling to turn Dalvon in for identity theft, Hudson is forced to wait, but meanwhile he discovers the chance to rehabilitate Miguel’s failing local businesses—enterprises left to Dalvon’s inexperienced care. The flagging ventures are a badly wrapped gift from heaven, and if Hudson can turn them around, he might be able to leverage the experience to finish his MBA.

Then Miguel returns to Ibiza, and instead of finding a boy toy, he discovers Hudson has turned his cold villa into a warm, welcoming home. Miguel’s path is clear convince Hudson to lay down his defenses and let love in.

I mostly really like Mary Calmes work. She does kinda have a MC type that she repeats often though. There is nothing wrong with that, a lot of authors do that, essentially rebooting the same character and playing out a different scenario. Calmes's MC is in his mid-twenties, brilliant in his field, makes friends and relates to people effortlessly, and gorgeous ( though he doesn't believe that). He never meets a problem that he can't smile and talk his way out of. The best example of this MC is Jory from the "Matter of Time" series. I think that Hudson is the worst example. The bones of a typical Calmes story is here, but only the bones. This story was released without the character development or details that would make it readable and the MC likable. If I have the timeline correct, Hudson and Miguel go from a first meeting to engaged in 2 days. The bulk of the story occurs without Miguel there. No action is examined or allowed to develop. I'm pretty sure that in a particular scene where Hudson fires a chef and hires a new one, that the restaurant went from having a reputation for terrible food to a reputation for amazing food in under an hour. That makes no sense and is quite impossible as well. Several times, Hudson is mistaken for his fraternal twin, the twin even using his passport to leave the country, except having someone making that mistake seems very unlikely from the minimal descriptions given. The twin is a slim blond with a tan and Hudson is a pale, buff redhead! How do you confuse the two? Irritating inconsistencies, little description of anything, and a broken timeline made this a poor read. I didn't enjoy this book and I would not recommend it to others.

Mary Calmes is an automatic pre-order for me...I love her writing and her characters always end up being friends I want to visit again and again. I was very excited when Lay It Down popped up for pre-order and even happier when it showed up on my on release day. This is a pretty quick read, and if you are familiar with Mary Calmes work and enjoy it, you will not be disappointed. This was another could not put it down fun ride with wonderful main and secondary characters. My only complaint was that it was over too quickly and I really wanted to spend some more time in this place with these people. Hudson is a terrific character, and similar to other Mary Calmes "main" characters in that you almost immediately love him, and so does everyone around him...but it's believable and genuine. He's a good guy, a smart guy, and you root for him from the beginning. This book was interesting in that you don't meet the other main character Miguel, until almost half way through. Miguel is definitely fantasy guy material...and I loved Miguel and Hudson together...I think my only qualm with this book is that it was almost too easy and too fast...I wanted a little more time to savor them falling in love, and it was a little bit insta-love. But Mary makes it work, and I really enjoyed the story. I liked the details about the location and the businesses; I wanted to smack Hudson's brother more than once...This is definitely going on the comfort food shelf and will be read multiple times in the future I'm sure. Mary Calmes books are always friends I can't wait to visit with again, and this one is no exception!
This one started out great, but somewhere around the middle it changed in a way that left me annoyed. That's where I stopped for a few days not finding the motivation to keep on reading. The whole idea was great, and I liked a lot of the way it played but the insta-love and insta-lust was SO all-over-the-place I couldn't enjoy the romance at all.

Dalvon and Hudson are twin brothers, not identical twins but they DO look very much a like. When Hudson comes to visit Dalvon in Ibiza he runs off on Hudson leaving him to deal with his mess. Hudson thought it would be him telling his VERY rich fiancee Miguel García he and Dalvon are over but it turned out it wasn't the ONLY thing Dalvon left in his care..

It is not very clear what Miguel thought when he left Dalvon in charge of his vila and businesses but once Hudson got there and started looking into things he started improving ALL of them and also the vila itself. For once he felt he has found his place even though he was stranded in Ibiza and he DID have to return to Boston for him studies. Yet for the short time to he stayed he made an impacted on the small community as they made an impact on him. I enjoyed seeing Hudson in his element, the way he made friends and worked with the people around him.

It was all so easy for him while he was the guy in charge yet when Miguel returns he starts to second guess himself not only because he isn't sure of his place anymore but because he is so VERY attracted to the guy and he seems to want him too. Things move WAY too quickly from this point. There is no "real romance" it's about UBER attraction and claiming the other guy. I didn't like that at all. I get that Miguel had a sense of who Hudson was through the reports he got on him and the way he treated everyone and how much of help he was with the businesses, yet he didn't KNOW the guy, and Hudson didn't really know anything about Miguel.. So the second part of the book was OTT attraction and cheesiness I didn't really care for.

Though this was a novella, it did have more elements about the siblings and how they work out their differences and how Dalvon also finds himself, and there was even a little bit of action with the other thing Dalvon left for Hudson to sort out. I would have liked a better focus on the relationship buildup and less of Dalvon and the other issue...

All in all it was a nice novella. The beginning was great. If you don't mind "insta" love/attraction you might really enjoy this one.
